An Insiders Guide to Wireless Communications
When Guglielmo Marconi, now known as the “father of radio,” sent and received his first radio signal more than 100 years ago, the event marked one of the great discoveries of modern physics. It all began with a simple radiotelegraph device, sending messages one letter at a time – first across town, and a few years later, across oceans. The world was amazed by this new and seemingly impossible technology – and the promise it held for communications.
Many variations of Marconi’s initial achievements have become part of our world. Wireless communication, such as radio and television, satellite technology, cordless phones, cell phones and pagers, is taken for granted by nearly everyone. A host of wireless gadgets make life more convenient and entertaining including remote controls for TVs and sound systems, car locks and garage doors. All of these devices have one common thread – they are operated across open spaces with no visible connection.
Wireless technology has also had a powerful impact on the computer industry. Significant advances in the past five years indicate we’re transitioning from a wired to a wireless society.
