Case Study: Tackling International Distribution Challenges
Advanced software enables international distributor to grow business.
As a national distributor, it’s challenging to remain competitive. But being an international distributor presents a whole new set of obstacles to overcome.
The challenge
Our client, an East Coast-based international distributor, recognized that as the company grew so did their desire for more sophisticated software systems. Since there are multiple regulations associated with being an international distributor, having advanced software systems is critical to remaining competitive and expanding a business.
With a growing customer base and increased product offerings came the need for improved inventory and sales software solutions. And as import regulations became stricter and more complex, having more advanced purchasing software became crucial to managing the accounting aspects of buying and selling foreign products.
The solution
RSM McGladrey consultants were brought in to assess the distributor’s current systems. As a result of the assessment, key problems were identified and solution-based recommendations were developed.
“We took the time to understand their industry,” says Michele Juliana, business development manager-Philadelphia, Penn. “This enabled us to customize solutions that were specific to their industry.”
In the end, RSM McGladrey consultants installed advanced Microsoft Great Plains® sales, inventory and purchasing software solutions. These modules were seamlessly integrated into the company’s existing software system.
Since RSM McGladrey consultants handled the implementation of the new software to ensure a smooth transition, the distributor was able to concentrate on the expansion of their business.
“We provided all of the necessary training materials and were available to address any questions or concerns — not only during the implementation, but long after the systems had been installed,” Juliana explains. “Although the software implementation is complete, we continue to be a valuable resource.”
The results
While all three modules were invaluable to the company’s continuing success, the purchasing module has allowed them to take the largest strides toward achieving their business objectives. It provides the company with additional capabilities to handle foreign currency translation, which is critical to running a successful international business.
And even as their business grows, this module, in addition to sales and inventory modules, has enabled the company to maintain low administrative staffing levels -- a luxury that affords them the opportunity to focus more resources on serving their customers.
