Playing the correct ball position for the club youre hitting is a key to iron play. For a 5-iron, its just ahead of center.
My weak grip keeps me from shutting the clubface on the backswing and hitting a hook.
Its only a 5-iron, yet I make a pretty full turn, with my back to the target. I also look fairly relaxed at the top, which is a good sign that Im making a smooth swing.
My swing is more upright than most swings today. My downswing is steep. Swinging the club up and down the target line helps my accuracy.
My finish has a little reverse-C, kind of like a young Tom Kites. The high hands tell me that my swing stayed closer to the target line than most kids swings today.
When you get into the longer irons, the key to making solid strikes is to really focus on the ball. After the ball is long gone, Im still looking where it was sitting.
