Six Tips for Improving your Mid-Iron Game

Click here to get expert golf tips from Chris DiMarco, one of the world’s best players and a proud member of Team RSM McGladrey.

This guide provides step-by-step photos illustrating the six tips below:

  • On the ball
Playing the correct ball position for the club you’re hitting is a key to iron play. For a 5-iron, it’s just ahead of center.
  • Open and shut
My weak grip keeps me from shutting the clubface on the backswing and hitting a hook.
  • Stay smooth
It’s only a 5-iron, yet I make a pretty full turn, with my back to the target. I also look fairly relaxed at the top, which is a good sign that I’m making a smooth swing.
  • Up and down
My swing is more upright than most swings today. My downswing is steep. Swinging the club up and down the target line helps my accuracy.
  • The old reverse-C
My finish has a little reverse-C, kind of like a young Tom Kite’s. The high hands tell me that my swing stayed closer to the target line than most kids’ swings today.
  • Stay focused
When you get into the longer irons, the key to making solid strikes is to really focus on the ball. After the ball is long gone, I’m still looking where it was sitting.

’The most important thing for me, the thing I constantly work on with my irons—and I know it sounds boring—is the fundamentals: grip, ball position, alignment and tempo. If I can get those things right, my swing has a way of taking care of itself."
