RSM McGladrey Energy Survey
The 2008 RSM McGladrey Manufacturing and Wholesale Distribution Survey highlighted inflation in energy, raw materials and transportation costs as a key concern for mid-sized companies. During discussions of the survey findings with legislative leaders in Washington, we were asked to update our results from April 2008. The responses were surprising. When 357 of the same executives surveyed for our April report were asked about these costs, they were far more pessimistic about inflation. Compared to the April findings:
- 50% more companies anticipate energy costs to rise by more than 10%
- 60% more companies expect raw materials costs to rise by more than 10%
- 160% more companies expect transportation costs to rise by more than 10%
"Increased global competition for raw materials and energy mean that companies will need to take immediate action and adopt new long-term strategies," says Tom Murphy, RSM McGladrey Executive Vice President of Manufacturing and Wholesale Distribution.
