Projecting Volume Variance Through Demand Modeling

Service consumption drives the amount of space, equipment and personnel that healthcare programs need, as well as the financial viability of those programs. For these and other reasons, healthcare organizations need to be able to accurately predict the volume of services that will be consumed by both current and future programs – a task that can be very challenging.

While many attempt to create estimates based on historical trends alone, future utilization can be affected by a number of interrelated factors, including population size, demo-graphics, technological changes and competition.

To accurately predict volume of service, you must answer several key questions

  • How large is the population of your market area? Do you expect to increase the area you are serving?
  • What are the age and demographic characteristics of the current and future populations?
  • What has been the historical use rate of the program being evaluated?
  • What environmental or technological factors are likely to impact future use rates?
  • Who is your competition today? Are there new competitors entering the market?

RSM McGladrey assists healthcare organizations across the country to answer these and other related questions. Our experienced healthcare consultants have generated volume projections for nearly every type of clinical program and service, and we conduct ongoing research to remain current with clinical trends and technology assessments.

We have applied this research and experience into designing a multidimensional demand-modeling process that can help you project future volumes for use in strategic planning, facility planning, operations improvement and financial planning.

Using our demand-modeling process, we have helped numerous healthcare organizations predict inpatient admissions and days by clinical service or product line, as well as project future volumes of diagnostic and treatment services used by both inpatients and outpatients.
